Has anyone ever spoken for you?<\/p>\n
Have you ever had anyone represent thoughts or feelings or words as being yours, and they weren’t?<\/p>\n
How did you feel about that?\u00a0 If someone has represented you by professing that you had said something, were they accurate?\u00a0 Was it true?<\/p>\n
How would you respond if it was not?\u00a0 Even if it was a nice thought, a nice sentiment.\u00a0 How would you feel about being credited for saying something you didn’t?<\/p>\n
I am about to be a real kill joy I am sure.\u00a0 I am about to call into question a Super Bowl commercial that appears to have been very well received.<\/p>\n
I did not see it aired.\u00a0 I did not watch the Super Bowl.\u00a0 I was in a car driving home that night from the U.P.<\/p>\n
I heard the commercial on the radio.\u00a0 The audio was played by a radio station I was listening to on the way to work this morning.\u00a0 The morning host was moved to tears by the commercial.\u00a0 I was not.<\/p>\n
It was the Paul Harvey “truck” commercial.\u00a0 Perhaps you saw it?\u00a0 Perhaps you loved it.\u00a0 Perhaps it moved you to tears.<\/p>\n
The sentiment was great.\u00a0 It was extolling the virtues of the American Farmer.\u00a0 I have not seen the visual, perhaps it was amazing.<\/p>\n
I am a pretty sentimental person.\u00a0 Well, more than that, I am someone who tries to move people.\u00a0 I attempt to put visual images and music together to touch hearts.\u00a0 I paint words on the canvas of this blog in the hopes of causing people to think, feel, reflect, laugh, consider.<\/p>\n
But the Paul Harvey commercial didn’t do that for me, at least not in the way they intended.\u00a0 And this is the reason.<\/p>\n
He put words in God’s mouth.<\/p>\n
I don’t know that God minded the thoughts.\u00a0 But I do wonder how He views the accreditation?<\/p>\n
I have done this too.\u00a0 And I wonder what God thinks about that.<\/p>\n
And I wonder what the ramifications are when we put words in God’s mouth.\u00a0 Words that it is easy enough to see He did not say.<\/p>\n
I wonder if this is not something that God was aiming at when He commanded us not to use His name in vain.<\/p>\n
If anyone can be trusted to speak for himself, I think God can.\u00a0 He certainly has said a lot.\u00a0 More than most of us are familiar with.\u00a0 He has certainly said more than I am familiar with, and He has definitely said more than I have heeded.<\/p>\n
I like Paul Harvey.\u00a0 A lot.\u00a0 And I like images and words that move me.<\/p>\n
Today, however, I am thinking, if you have something you want to say, well, say it.<\/p>\n
And speak for yourself.<\/p>\n
