{"id":1161,"date":"2013-10-19T19:13:32","date_gmt":"2013-10-19T19:13:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.choosingcomedy.com\/?p=1161"},"modified":"2013-10-19T19:13:32","modified_gmt":"2013-10-19T19:13:32","slug":"hello-51","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.choosingcomedy.com\/?p=1161","title":{"rendered":"Hello 51"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I was just driving down Washington Street in Marquette, MI, and glanced at the speed limit sign on the right.<\/p>\n<p>Speed limit 50.<\/p>\n<p>50<\/p>\n<p>I am fifty. That&#8217;s my number right now. But Tuesday I must surrender it. \u00a0And then this number that represents half a century of life, that freaks most folks out, but that I have embraced &#8211; this great number will no longer be mine.<\/p>\n<p>And I will simply be 51.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing real cool about that.<\/p>\n<p>I will be on the Other Side of 50. \u00a0That&#8217;s the hill right? \u00a0And I&#8217;m now over it? \u00a0On the downward slope?<\/p>\n<p>50 years of life, of learning.<\/p>\n<p>I keep learning and so I discover better ways to do things. I see places where I thought I was right, but I was wrong. I gain a better understanding of myself, others, life. But there is no going back to apply these lessons learned. \u00a0No do overs. \u00a0My kids are grown so the lessons I have learned about parenting can only be passed on to those who are parenting growing children now.<\/p>\n<p>In 50 years I have made a lot of mistakes. Reflecting on my mistakes Regret becomes an unwelcome companion.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Hello my name is Regret. \u00a0I&#8217;m pretty sure we have met. \u00a0Every day of your life, I&#8217;m the whisper inside that won&#8217;t let you forget.&#8221; \u00a0(Matthew West, <em>Hello my name is&#8230;<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p>Regret might whisper to Matt West, but it is much bolder with me. \u00a0It prefers to use memories like postcards and flash the images before my eyes till I cringe, blush from embarassment or groan with&#8230;regret.<\/p>\n<p>Regret over things I have done or said. \u00a0Mistakes, missteps, miscues.<\/p>\n<p>I think my mistakes are devastating.<\/p>\n<p>Listening to a conference I attended a number of years back, the speaker instructed extroverts to write some phrases on a post it note to keep with us during meetings:<\/p>\n<p>I was wrong. \u00a0I made a mistake. \u00a0I dropped the ball. \u00a0I&#8217;m sorry.<\/p>\n<p>As I listened to this talk for what must be the eighth time, it dawned on me&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>She <em>assumes<\/em> I will be wrong, I will make a mistake, I will drop the ball. And yet I will still be there to say I&#8217;m sorry. She <em>knows<\/em> I will blow it. \u00a0She<em> expects<\/em> I will. \u00a0And it isn&#8217;t game ending.<\/p>\n<p>I always thought mistakes <em>were<\/em> game ending. \u00a0I have believed that mistakes were something to be deeply ashamed of, something from which you don&#8217;t really recover.<\/p>\n<p>Yet this speaker was moving on as though mistakes did not bring the world to a screeching halt. \u00a0As though they were something you point out as you go along. \u00a0Yeah, there&#8217;s a mistake, I&#8217;m sorry, and we&#8217;re walking&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Is this possible? \u00a0Can mistakes be simply, mistakes, and not the crippling events I believe them to be?<\/p>\n<p>Can I ditch Regret and it&#8217;s unwelcome version of This is Your (messed up) Life?<\/p>\n<p>As I prepare to relinquish 50, as time walks on, I wonder&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I was just driving down Washington Street in Marquette, MI, and glanced at the speed limit sign on the right.
