{"id":958,"date":"2011-11-25T22:53:03","date_gmt":"2011-11-26T03:53:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/choosingcomedy.wordpress.com\/?p=958"},"modified":"2011-11-25T22:53:03","modified_gmt":"2011-11-26T03:53:03","slug":"i-read-a-book","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.choosingcomedy.com\/?p=958","title":{"rendered":"I read a&#8230;..book?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>According to family history my first sentence was: \u00a0I read a book. \u00a0I was in the bathtub holding a partially submerged Reader&#8217;s Digest when I made this declarative statement.<\/p>\n<p>It was not only a childhood milestone, but greatly prophetic. \u00a0This is what I do. \u00a0I read books. \u00a0(Note the graphic I selected for this blogsite.)<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Early in our marriage my husband sought out a bookstore to purchase a birthday present for me. \u00a0I was delighted with the book and asked him how he selected it. \u00a0He told me he went for the thickest book, so it would last longer.<\/p>\n<p>We moved eight times in our first eight years of marriage, and my brother helped with almost every move. \u00a0In the midst of one move he looked at me from under a large box of books and said, &#8220;You people read too much.&#8221; \u00a0I learned to pack the books in smaller boxes.<\/p>\n<p>My favorite thing to do with my kids was read to them. \u00a0We spent a lot of time reading. \u00a0A lot. \u00a0It is my favorite pastime.<\/p>\n<p>I cannot afford to purchase every book I want to read, so I count on the Redford Library to provide most of my reading material. \u00a0If they don&#8217;t have it, they can get it from other libraries. \u00a0Isn&#8217;t that a great system?<\/p>\n<p>A friend recently told me there is a publishing house that will send me a book, for free, if I agree to write a review after I have read it.<\/p>\n<p>Really? \u00a0I love to read. \u00a0<strong><em>And\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>I have lots of opinions about the books I read. \u00a0This is a match made in heaven.<\/p>\n<p>I applied. \u00a0I was accepted. \u00a0I went to the website to select my first book. \u00a0That&#8217;s right, I get to <strong><em>choose<\/em><\/strong> what book I want to receive, read and review.<\/p>\n<p>There was a long list, based on some interests that I noted: \u00a0fiction, children, etc. \u00a0Right away I saw about a dozen books that I would like to read. \u00a0How would I choose? \u00a0So many books, so little time&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s when it happened.<\/p>\n<p>The bubble burst. \u00a0What seemed too good to be true, was too good to be true.<\/p>\n<p>The list of books I was perusing was a list of eBooks. \u00a0These are books that are available electronically to people who own a reading tablet like a Kindle or Nook.<\/p>\n<p>I scrolled down the page and found another list of books. \u00a0What shall we call them? \u00a0Non virtual books? \u00a0Actual books? \u00a0Paper books? \u00a0Old fashioned? \u00a0Antiques? \u00a0Endangered?<\/p>\n<p>It was a very short list. \u00a0There were about eight books from which to choose. \u00a0None of my original selections appeared on this list.<\/p>\n<p>Discouraged, I left the website with no book.<\/p>\n<p>My firstborn came for a visit shortly after that and told me she was getting a Kindle for Christmas. \u00a0I had, in the recent past, spoken with disdain about these reading tablets. \u00a0I looked down my nose at <em>electronic<\/em> books.<\/p>\n<p>Except now I had my nose pressed against the computer &#8220;window&#8221; looking at books that I wanted to read, that I could get for free, in the electronic format.<\/p>\n<p>Bring on the rationalizations.\u00a0Let&#8217;s see&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>I will have lots of books to choose from if I have a reading tablet&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>When I travel it will be much easier to carry a tablet in the place of the many books I take with me. I average about six per trip. With one being a Bible we&#8217;re talking about a hefty carry on bag&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>My daughter is doing it, how bad can it be?<\/p>\n<p>I went to the store to look at these tablets for electronic books. \u00a0They were okay. \u00a0There were more than I thought. \u00a0I thought there was only the Kindle and the Nook. \u00a0Turns out the market is a lot bigger. \u00a0I started playing with one from Sony. \u00a0It had a feature called &#8220;handwriting&#8221;. \u00a0I explored it.<\/p>\n<p>This tablet lets you write notes and draw. \u00a0It comes with a stylus. \u00a0(This was important because those stupid touch screen gadgets don&#8217;t seem to register my fingers. \u00a0I have no idea why, but I am a non entity when it comes to touch screens.)<\/p>\n<p>Well that was it. \u00a0The writing feature did it. \u00a0Next to reading my favorite activity is writing. \u00a0Yank the line to set the hook and reel her in, we&#8217;ve got her.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t know if I will be able to make the transition from actual book to virtual book, but come Christmas I will begin to try. \u00a0Because under the tree will be a small box with a pretty red tablet inside it.<\/p>\n<p>I better keep it away from the bathtub.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>According to family history my first sentence was: \u00a0I read a book. \u00a0I was in the bathtub holding a partially submerged Reader&#8217;s Digest when I made this declarative statement.
